UBC Recreation Centre North adds a new hub for movement, connection and everyday campus life. Designed to make recreation more accessible, the high-performance facility brings together three gymnasiums, a fitness centre and an indoor track in a welcoming space built for students and the wider UBC community. It also marked another project with ETRO’s longstanding client - UBC Properties Trust.
Before the building could rise, the team had to untangle what was happening below it. Active district energy and storm systems ran directly through the project footprint and an operating loading dock, requiring extensive investigation, rerouting and carefully phased shutdowns. ETRO used LiDAR scanning, 3D modelling and detailed logistics planning to coordinate the work while maintaining parkade access, emergency routes, pedestrian movement and surrounding food service operations - clearing the way for a major new recreation facility without bringing campus life to a halt.
